Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American musician and singer, better than her stage name Queen Latifah. Her career as a musician as well as a film and television artist has won the actress the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won an Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who was a teacher the class at Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah attended Catholic School in Newark, NJ and was educated through her family's Baptist Church. Latifah was the stage name she used before she reached the age of eight. It means very sensitive in Arabic. Always a tall girl her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a power forward for her high school basketball team. The song she sang was home from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah became a beatboxer for The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He gave the recording to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
